Official files state that Yerba Mate is a natural source of caffeine, chlorogenic acids, theobromine, and mate saponins, but they do not declare a separate amount for any of them. They also state that caffeine is not standardized due to the natural variation of the ingredient. Therefore, it is incorrect to translate the results of a specific dose of chlorogenic acid, or a Yerba Mate tea study, into a guaranteed result for Unimate. 15

What is Yerba Mate and What is in it?

Yerba Mate consists of the leaves of Ilex paraguariensis, not just another name for caffeine or a single isolated substance. The chemical composition changes with the variety, drying and extraction methods, and the degree of grinding and preparation. For this reason, some research studies tea prepared from leaves, some use standardized aqueous extract in capsules, and some use commercial beverages. These are not biologically or analytically identical interventions. 3 4

What does the Unimate label confirm, and what does it not?

Evidence on finished product. Referring to current official labeling reports, the US Unimate profile confirms that Natural Lemon, Lemon Ginger, Raspberry Pomegranate, and Fierce each contain 3g of Unimate (Green Mate Leaf Extract) Powder per sachet. Additives vary by flavor: Lemon Ginger and Fierce declare 350 mg of ginger extract, and Raspberry Pomegranate declares 150 mg of pomegranate extract. These additives should not be generalized to all flavors. 15

The label does not state a milligram dose for chlorogenic acids, theobromine, or mate saponins. It confirms the presence of natural caffeine but does not provide a standardized number, stating instead that the amount is non-standardized. Decaf Unimate is a separate formulation of 3g decaffeinated mate extract, with the declared caffeine limit being less than 15 mg per serving, not zero mg. Furthermore, formulations vary between markets; details from a US label should not be transferred to another country or flavor. 15

These are compositional facts, not clinical results. There is no published trial in the scientific sources we reviewed that tests the current Unimate itself, with its specific sachet, formulation, and flavors, on appetite, GLP-1, blood sugar, weight, or energy. Consequently, direct evidence on the finished product proves the declared content and disclosure limits, not specific health efficacy.

Chlorogenic Acids and Polyphenols: A Useful Signal, Not a Product Dose

Evidence on ingredient. Chlorogenic acids are a family of polyphenols, not necessarily a single compound in every sample. In a randomized double-blind trial involving 30 people with impaired glucose tolerance, 15 received 400 mg of chlorogenic acid three times daily for 12 weeks. The acid group recorded a decrease in fasting glucose from 5.7 to 5.5 mmol/L and an increase in the Matsuda index for insulin sensitivity, along with other changes in anthropometric measurements and lipids; no significant changes appeared in the placebo group. 12

This is a significant human result for isolated chlorogenic acid at a dose of 1,200 mg per day. However, it does not prove the dose of chlorogenic acids in Unimate, nor does it prove that polyphenols in mate extract are absorbed or behave in the same way, and it does not prove a therapeutic effect. The Unimate label does not declare this dose in the first place. 12 15

A recent trial on standardized mate extract provides a useful example of the difference between a "signal" and "proof." Thirty-four men, aged 45–65 with at most one metabolic syndrome criterion, consumed an extract providing 580 mg per day of caffeoylquinic derivatives for four weeks, then a placebo in a double-blind crossover design. No significant therapeutic differences appeared in most markers or in the response to a glucose load; a decrease within the mate group was seen in fasting glucose between day 0 and 28, with subgroup results in those at higher risk. 5 This serves as a reminder that a result within a group is not always strong evidence of superiority over the comparator.

Theobromine and Caffeine: Do Not Reduce Yerba Mate to "Calm Energy"

Evidence on ingredient. Theobromine is a methylxanthine with a structure similar to caffeine, but their responses are not the same. In a randomized double-blind within-subject acute human dose trial, 80 healthy adults were tested on 250, 500, or 1,000 mg of theobromine, or 200 mg of caffeine, or a placebo. Subjective effects of theobromine were limited at 250 mg, negative mood effects appeared at higher doses, and heart rate increased with the dose. 13

This does not mean that the theobromine naturally occurring in Yerba Mate causes these results; the doses in the study were isolated and relatively high, and the amount of theobromine in a Unimate sachet is not declared. However, it illustrates two common errors: it is incorrect to attribute every mental effect to theobromine, and it is incorrect to assume that "natural" equals "neutral for everyone." 13 Similarly, caffeine can contribute to the experience of alertness in some people, but its contribution to regular Unimate cannot be estimated without a declared caffeine amount or a trial on the product.

Appetite, Satiety, and GLP-1: What Has Actually Appeared?

Satiety is a complex experience involving stomach fullness, gut and brain signals, dietary habits, sleep, and social context. GLP-1 is a gut hormone that typically rises after food and participates in regulating insulin secretion and satiety. The existence of a potential biological pathway is not equal to a clinical effect or equal to medications targeting this pathway.

Human Evidence on Self-Rated Appetite

Evidence on ingredient. In a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial, 12 healthy and physically active women completed 30 minutes of cycling after consuming approximately 2g of ground mate leaves or a placebo. Hunger scores and "prospective food consumption" on a subjective visual scale decreased with Yerba Mate, while fullness did not change, and there was a non-significant trend toward decreased desire to eat. 7

This is a relatively well-designed study for an acute question, but it does not measure subsequent food intake, does not last for weeks, and its sample is very small and specific: healthy, active women under controlled exercise. Thus, it supports a precise statement: Yerba Mate extract/leaves showed a change in some subjective appetite measures in a small acute trial with exercise, not proof of sustained reduction in food or weight. 7

What About GLP-1?

Evidence on mechanism. Historically, the clearest GLP-1 evidence came from mice, not humans. In mice on a high-fat diet, Yerba Mate at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg for three weeks reduced food intake and body weight, and GLP-1 and leptin rose; individual components of Yerba Mate also acutely raised GLP-1 in this model. 14 This is a plausible and useful mechanism for hypothesis generation, but differences in dosage, metabolism, and the digestive system make direct translation to humans incorrect.

The most important correction came from a more recent human trial: in a controlled crossover study where each period lasted eight weeks, 52 participants unaccustomed to Yerba Mate consumed three cups daily of tea prepared from three bags, versus an isocaloric decaffeinated beverage. Ghrelin and GIP decreased after Yerba Mate, but GLP-1 did not change. 4 Therefore, current direct human evidence does not support the definitive statement that Yerba Mate "raises GLP-1" in humans.

There is a trial on a blend containing Yerba Mate, Guarana, and Damiana that monitored appetite hormones and food intake, but it is not evidence for Yerba Mate alone; the contribution of each plant cannot be separated. For this reason, it is not used here to attribute GLP-1 effects to Unimate or to Yerba Mate individually.

Blood Sugar, Insulin Sensitivity, and Metabolic Health

Evidence on ingredient. The best starting point is the 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis, which included 13 randomized controlled trials up to January 2025. Pooled results in a limited number of studies indicated a decrease in postprandial glucose by an average of 12.76 mg/dL, a decrease in HbA1c by 0.37%, and HOMA by 0.24, but each of these results relied on only two trials. No significant effect appeared for fasting glucose, fasting insulin, BMI, waist circumference, or blood lipid markers. 1

Thus, there may be a signal regarding post-meal glycemic control in specific groups, but it is not a license to claim that Yerba Mate "controls sugar" or improves insulin sensitivity for everyone. The review itself emphasizes the limited evidence and mentions side effects reported by studies, including sleep disturbance, tachycardia, and gastrointestinal discomfort. 1

Original trials help explain the reason for this caution. In an older pilot study, 29 people with type 2 diabetes and 29 people with pre-diabetes drank 330 ml of roasted Yerba Mate tea three times daily and/or received nutritional counseling for 60 days. The diabetes group saw decreases in some markers such as fasting glucose, HbA1c, and LDL, while in the pre-diabetes group, the best lipid changes were associated with combining Yerba Mate with nutritional counseling, coinciding with a clear change in fat and fiber consumption. 9 The small size of the study, its pilot nature, and the entanglement of nutrition with the intervention prevent its results from being turned into a recommendation or a product claim.

In the 2025 study, baseline glucose values were normal among participants; nevertheless, researchers reported a decrease in fasting glucose, insulin, and HOMA-IR, with an increase in QUICKI consistent with improved insulin sensitivity, after Yerba Mate within their analysis. However, it is an older study published later, involving only 52 participants, and does not mean that the result for a population with normal glucose extends to every context. 4

Lipids: The Pooled Result is More Cautious Than Individual Studies

In a separate meta-analysis of blood lipids, 13 studies were included, and 7 experimental studies with a total of 378 patients entered the quantitative analysis. Researchers found no significant differences between Yerba Mate and the comparator in total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, or triglycerides, with small studies, conflicting results, and the potential influence of baseline differences. 2 Therefore, LDL reductions seen in individual studies should be treated as results requiring confirmation, not a final truth about Yerba Mate or Unimate.

Fat Oxidation, Energy, and Oxidative Stress: Where Does the Mechanism End?

Fat Oxidation During Exercise is Not Long-Term Fat Loss

Evidence on mechanism. In the same study of twelve women, fatty acid oxidation during 30 minutes of cycling was higher with Yerba Mate compared to placebo; the difference at minute 20, for example, was 0.21 vs 0.17 g/min, and total energy expenditure did not change in the primary analysis. 7 This is an acute metabolic observation under exercise, not a direct measurement of fat mass loss over weeks.

More recent evidence limits generalization: in a crossover study involving 29 adults, two commercial brands of Yerba Mate prepared with water and caffeine were compared during low-to-moderate intensity cycling. Yerba Mate drinks did not significantly affect energy expenditure, substrate oxidation, heart rate, or exercise efficiency compared to control drinks. 6 Differences in formulation, dose, sample, and exercise intensity may explain the variance, but it practically means the phrase "Yerba Mate burns fat" is much simpler than the evidence suggests.

Oxidative Stress: Laboratory Markers are Not a Health Promise

Polyphenols are capable of interacting with oxidative and inflammatory pathways; however, the word "antioxidant" is not enough to predict a health outcome. In a randomized trial involving 74 volunteers with dyslipidemia, Yerba Mate groups consumed one liter daily for 90 days, with or without dietary intervention. Serum antioxidant capacity and reduced glutathione rose in all groups, while lipid hydroperoxides, protein carbonyls, or paraoxonase-1 did not change significantly. 10

This means some laboratory markers moved, while others did not, and the accompanying dietary intervention makes it harder to isolate the effect of Yerba Mate. In a shorter crossover trial involving 92 people receiving antiviral therapy, the abstract showed no clear effect specific to 3g of Yerba Mate daily for 15 days on the inflammatory or oxidative markers measured; the notable result was in HDL after dark chocolate, not after Yerba Mate. 11 Consequently, it is incorrect to use "oxidative stress" as an unjustified bridge toward broad claims about energy or metabolic health.

Weight and Body Composition: A Small Signal, Not a Guaranteed Result

In a Korean randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial, 30 adults with obesity (as defined by the study) were assigned to 3g daily of an aqueous Yerba Mate extract or a placebo for 12 weeks; 25 participants completed it. Significant differences in favor of Yerba Mate appeared in fat mass, fat percentage, and waist-to-hip ratio, with no significant clinical changes recorded in safety tests. 8 However, it is a small exploratory test, most participants were women, and it used a standardized extract (35 mg chlorogenic acid/g), not Unimate.

This result does not override the broader conclusion: the 2025 meta-analysis found no significant effect on BMI or waist circumference across pooled trials. 1 The most balanced scientific path is to consider body composition trials as testable signals, not a promise of weight loss or "metabolism acceleration."

Unimate can be placed within Feel Great as a Yerba Mate extract-based drink option, not a substitute for dietary patterns, sleep, movement, or medical follow-up. What may matter to some users is enjoying a drink low in added sugar according to the flavor profile, using it as part of a mindful morning routine, or noting personal response to appetite and energy. However, this is an individual experience and not clinical proof.

If a person chooses to use it, it is more accurate to evaluate what can be measured without promises: Does the timing suit them regarding sleep? Does it make them more anxious, cause palpitations, or heartburn? Does it make them bypass their need for food or help them build a more regular routine? And are they maintaining adequate water, food, and movement? If the answer is negative, increasing the product is not an automatic scientific response.

Caffeine is a key practical point because the regular Unimate profile does not specify a fixed number for it. Other caffeine sources should be accounted for, and the product should not be used near bedtime by those affected by it; the actual country and flavor label should be read. The official profile states that Unicity does not recommend it for children, pregnant, or nursing women due to the lack of testing in those groups. For those on a medication plan, with persistent symptoms, or concerns about interactions, the appropriate question for a health professional is about personal suitability, not a "therapeutic dose" of Yerba Mate. 15

Unimate should not be confused with Balance in terms of evidence. Balance is a different product with a different label, and evidence for its fibers—if discussed—does not become evidence for Yerba Mate, just as Yerba Mate studies do not become evidence for Balance. The best framework remains: The ingredient may be part of a broader strategy, but the strategy itself is based on sustainable habits.

Practical Conclusion

Yerba Mate is a scientific topic that is more promising than settled. Small human studies and systematic reviews have shown signals regarding subjective appetite, some glucose markers, and body composition, but these signals coexist with neutral results in important markers such as total weight, fat oxidation during exercise, and pooled blood lipids. The most recent human GLP-1 study clarifies that mechanisms common in marketing should not be assumed: GLP-1 did not change in it. 1 4 6

Therefore, when talking about Unimate, it is correct to say that the current US label proves 3g of mate leaf extract, and that Yerba Mate is a natural source of scientifically researched compounds. It is not correct to jump from that to saying Unimate raises GLP-1, controls blood sugar, increases fat burning, or guarantees satiety and energy. A mature reading of the evidence gives the product its appropriate size: an option that can be part of a broader routine, not a shortcut to metabolic health.
