Does the Schijf van Vijf help control blood sugar?

Yes — it provides a balanced, high‑fibre foundation (whole grains, vegetables, legumes, lean proteins) that aligns with evidence for reducing post‑meal glucose spikes. See Voedingscentrum.

Can I follow a 4‑4‑12 or intermittent fasting plan while on diabetes medication?

Only under medical supervision. Inform your huisarts and diabetes team — medications like insulin/sulfonylureas may need dose or timing changes.

Which Dutch foods have the lowest glycemic impact?

Legumes, whole rye/volkoren bread, thick oats or intact kernels, non‑starchy vegetables, and unsalted nuts typically give smaller post‑meal glucose rises.

Do viscous fibers (oat beta‑glucan, psyllium) actually change glucose?

Meta‑analyses of RCTs show viscous soluble fibers reduce postprandial glucose and can lower fasting glucose and HbA1c modestly — they are supported by clinical evidence.

Who coordinates diabetes care in the Netherlands?

The huisarts (GP) is the first contact and coordinates referrals to diëtists, diabetes nurses, and specialist care; check your zorgverzekering for diëtist coverage.
